In 1289, Mongolian Envoy Nestorian Bar Sauma met with King of France and King Edward 11 of England as well celebrating mass with the Pope Nicholas IV. The letter of Arghun Khan to Philippe IV of France was handed. In his entourage were 13 people. Among them was a woman. Probably the first woman envoy recorded in history. Also Interesting is the letter was written in paper made in Korea. In fact, the Nestorian Church was, in term of its geographical reach, already larger than its European counterpart. The Journey of Nestorian Rabban Sauma, as an allegory for Mongolia's engagement with the wider world today, and the alliances it is trying to shape in East Asia and world at large. His efforts to lure Europe's kings and religious leaders in to a super-alliance with the Mongols failed-but his voyage to the West is one of the milestones in EAST-WEST relations.
