Global Head Sustainability & Climate Solutions - Zurich Resilience Solutions bei Zurich Insurance Company Ltd

Switzerland has not been immune to the heatwave Europe is currently witnessing. In fact, according to Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss, climate warming is proceeding twice as fast in Switzerland as the global average, as we're a landlocked country, far from the cooling effects of the oceans. In any case, extreme weather events know no boundaries. Resilience must be developed at regional levels and not locally. We can't just forget this current heatwave as soon as its over but learn what resilience measures need to be implemented (from both mitigation and adaptation perspectives), involving all affected stakeholders, including policymakers, academia, civil society, etc. and share these experiences globally. This is the new normal and we need to move from crisis management to risk management, treating such events as systemic risks rather than isolated incidents, to quote my friend Juan Azcárate (Deputy Director General of Energy and Climate Change at Madrid City Council), with whom we worked on such scenarios.
