This Friday, June 19th Alterra Mountain Company commemorates Juneteenth, the U.S. federal holiday marking the 161st anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In observance of Juneteenth, celebrations and conversations are taking place across and proximate to our global mountain community for ongoing reflection, engagement, and connection.
