💧 Hydropower is a cornerstone of Switzerland’s energy future — and a key lever to strengthen winter security of supply. 💦 The planned raising of the Moiry and Emosson dams illustrates how existing infrastructure can deliver tangible impact, quickly and efficiently. Part of the “Round Table on Hydropower” launched in 2020, these projects aim not to increase overall production, but to store surplus summer solar energy and make it available in winter, when Switzerland needs it most. ❄️ ⚡ By raising the Moiry dam by 9 metres and Emosson by 10 metres, an additional 166 GWh of flexible storage capacity could be unlocked — without new water intakes. This makes them among the most cost-efficient projects identified, with strong potential to reinforce Switzerland’s energy reserves. These projects also show that pragmatic, technically feasible solutions already exist — and can be implemented within a relatively short timeframe, with commissioning envisaged in the early 2030s. While regulatory, economic and cross-border considerations remain, their intrinsic value for security of supply is clear. At Alpiq, we are committed to investing in solutions that strengthen resilience, optimise existing assets, and accelerate the energy transition. 👉 Read more in the article by Jonathan Fauriel, Head Civil Engineering & Environment, and Carlo Clivaz, Project Manager Production Extension at Alpiq: https://lnkd.in/ee6QcTyY
