Customer Event Alpiq Origination CH – Visiting Swissgrid AG Together with Swissgrid, we had the pleasure of hosting an engaging customer event last week, focusing on the single-price model for balancing energy introduced on 1 January 2026, and the growing importance of intraday trading. Following the welcome of more than 50 participants by Swissgrid and Alpiq, key topics related to the balancing energy market took center stage. Karin Söderström from the Swiss Federal Federal Office of Energy presented a recently published study on Switzerland’s balancing energy demand in an international comparison, providing valuable and well-founded insights into future developments. Marc Rüede from Swissgrid then highlighted current challenges in system operations, shared initial experiences with the new single-price model, and highlighted recent developments in both the intraday and balancing energy markets. From Alpiq, Gaëtan V. shared practical insights into day-to-day operations of intraday trading and clearly demonstrated how AI-powered forecasting models support the work. The subsequent discussions clearly showed how rapidly the energy market is evolving. Topics such as the expansion of solar energy, the increasing need for system flexibility, and the central role of battery storage in Switzerland were discussed intensively and from multiple perspectives.
