Goldencup St. John’s Wort (Hypericum patulum) is an ornamental shrub with deep yellow cup-shaped flowers that bloom in summer and stay through fall. The leaves are oval-shaped and evergreen while the blooms attract bees, butterflies and birds. The plants are hardy and easy to grow and tolerate almost any soil. They are great for untrimmed hedges, mass plantings or for creating an evergreen form in the garden. The genus St. John’s Wort (genus Hypericum), consists of nearly 500 species of shrubs. While several species like Goldencup St. John’s Wort are cultivated for their attractive flowers, others like Common St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) are cultivated for use in herbal medicine. The name St. John’s Wort stems from the fact it blooms in England around June 24 (the feast day of St. John the Baptist) and “wort” derives from an Old English word for herb or plant. #goldencupstjohnswort #ornamentalplants
