💡 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 🔧 From early sketches to offshore breakthroughs, 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬’𝐑&𝐃 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 don’t follow a fixed track. In part 1 of our R&D series, three engineers at different stages of their careers share how curiosity, responsibility and collaboration shape their path. Philip Wüst, 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐑&𝐃 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫: 𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 ⏩ On my second day at Allseas, I was already at our fabrication, testing and coating facility in Heijningen. Coming from a background with no offshore experience, seeing the scale of the equipment was fascinating. Before I joined, I thought offshore engineering was mostly oil and gas, and people fixing things with big wrenches. That’s not entirely wrong, but what surprised me is how diverse the work is. There’s so much more to it, and that’s what makes it interesting. 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 💡 What really stands out to me is how quickly ideas become reality. You design something on your laptop, and not long after you see it being built or used offshore – it’s incredibly motivating. Pretty much from day one, you’re handed the responsibility, so I also felt I was contributing much sooner than expected. 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 ✨ The biggest challenge so far has been the level of detail. At university, things stay quite conceptual. Here, you must make sure every component works offshore – from bearings to sensors. That’s where you really learn, especially from the people around you. What I like most is the freedom. There are many ways to solve a problem, and you’re trusted to find your own approach. 𝐄𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 🎢 Looking ahead, I see myself growing into a more generalist role, working across disciplines and maybe taking on a team-leading position. For now, I’m just enjoying the variety: one day designing, the next day offshore.
