✨ CONTINUITY and COHESION in Animation! Some big C words that get brought in all film making and of course Animation, are COHESION and CONTINUITY. Now they have many different meanings, but I wanted to mention and scratch the surface of the BIG meanings that maybe you as a beginner in Animation or lover of animation might not realize or know how much work goes into. 🟡 CONTINUITY: This usually implies to plot, story, prop, position, lighting, etc details across all or multiple shots need to create a seamless narrative. Ive posted some screenshots of Continuity errors below, but Examples can be, if we see an umbrella behind a character, then cut to the person he’s talking to, when we come back that Umbrella should still be there (unless narratively something has changed). In the world of PRE PRODUCTION BUT ALSO RETAKES: Continuity is a huge thing to follow. If we changed something in one shot, does is affect other shots? If so, we need to fix ALL of the shots it occurs. More examples: - Hookups: maybe only fix 1 shot to another. But can be more! - Prop or Costume changes: can change a whole RANGE of shots. - Its not just visual! Storywise: If something has changed about a character but we bring up the old version/etc. This goes into the world of "canon". Can affect 1 or several shots. In retakes, continuity can play into if we can do a creative fix. If this going to cost 1 shot to fix or 27 shots to fix? Of course, if it’s an error (not creative) that needs to be fixed it almost always is a Priority 1 fix 🟡 COHESION Is making sure not only SHOT to SHOT it looks like the same animation, direction, animator has done it, but on bigger scales too! SEQ to SEQ, EPI TO EPI, and especially on films from start to beginning. It is very jarring to an audience when they can tell the style has slightly changed, or god forbid the quality has changed. It looks like a new show, a new movie, something gone wrong. Cohesion is so important & hard to achieve, but that’s what working on projects is about. Every individual artist is so talented, but the SUPERVISORS & DIRECTORS are incharge of managing the style. Keeping everyone on model, in the specific art & direction set forward by Directors, Showrunner, Creator etc. It takes a lot of review and effort to get everyone on the same cohesion. On projects sometimes we have multiple hands in not even just internally. We have Co-Productions, Outsourcing, hiring extra hands internally too, that also take direction to keep cohesion. Now, do mistakes make it thru? OF COURSE. This is human made art. :) But its always nice to have an eye open at all times for these 2 principles no matter production team or art team.
