What do connection, division, and belonging mean to people from different communities? Our new series “The Middle Ground” provides answers. In the first episode, Gabriel Astorga, PhD and science communicator, talks with Katharina Utermöhl, CFA about the Social Resilience Index. As Head of Thematic and Policy Research at Allianz and a member of the team behind the index, she brings firsthand insights and context to the discussion. Since 2020, the index measures how well societies absorb shocks, adapt to change, and maintain stability across economic, social, and institutional dimensions. While the Social Resilience Index provides valuable data on polarization and resilience, it cannot fully capture how people within individual communities respond to changes. Economic growth alone doesn’t automatically lead to greater trust in institutions or stronger social cohesion. Despite positive trends, many people feel frustrated and left behind, this can intensify social tensions and unrest.
