"Who here has done real work in programming. And to be clear what I mean, real work means you've worked on a codebase with more than 10,000 lines" This was what professor Wen-mei Hwu asked us in a class I took decades ago. Funny enough, even though I was a graduate student I had only touched my first 10k line codebase in the previous semester. Every other programmer in my age group is saying that the jobs for junior programmers are being wiped out. The question in my mind is if we can go from a 10-line program to a 1000 line program in our first semester. Why the hell, can't we reach 10,000 line programs or even 100,000+ line programs within the three and a half years afterwards?
