Would you stand up on public transport for a pregnant woman? If you read that and said 'Yes', you're probably lying to yourself. Over the past few weeks my very pregnant wife has been keeping track of how many times she's been offered a seat while commuting - or, at least, had someone else ask her before taking the seat themselves. The answer is 0%. Is this really us? It's something I'm noticing more and more - how infrequently we collectively pay attention to the needs of others in our shared spaces like public transport. I regularly see young families or mobility restricted people valiantly persevering with standing on the light rail, while 20 and 30-somethings sit comfortably in the courtesy seats doom scrolling on their phones. So my small request if you're still reading this... Tomorrow, just look up. You might see someone who needs that seat more than you.
