Virtual Reality - are we teaching surgeons or just playing video games? I recently had the opportunity to attend VR Surgical Simulation workshops at the Royal Free Simulation Centre. The session consisted of eight immersive VR surgical scenarios, ranging from ectopic cyst removal to x-ray assisted renal artery stent insertion. Having a go at real surgical training simulators was exhilarating but challenging. Seeing how my manual skills improved after two, three, four goes, showed me how surgical competencies and precision can be only developed through continuous repetition. A big thank you to UCL Surgical Society and Association of Surgeons in Training for organising these inspiring workshops!
