📢📄 Claudia Rives Casanova, PhD. and I are glad to share our new article on actor-driven geopoliticization, focusing on perceptions of Chinese strategic narratives in European media. 💡We identify communication and discourse as key elements of current geopolitics. 💡We combine a strategic narratives approach with the lens of politicization to assess geopoliticization. 💡We analyze sentiment and themes related to China’s identity as a global actor in the media debates of 13 EU Member States. ✅We conceptualize societal geopoliticization as a process leading to issues becoming a matter of geopolitical competition through discourse, and we detect it by combining sentiment analysis and politicization levels. ✅ We find that there is variation in the perception of China across EU Member States and develop a spectrum of societal geopoliticization 📕 This research is part of the upcoming special issue in European Politics and Society Journal on "Drivers and Patterns of Geo-politicizing the European Union". Stay tuned for our take on this debate from myself, Kolja Raube and Wouter Wolfs and check out great contributions by Chad Damro, Pieter de Wilde , Ben Tonra, MRIA , Michela Ceccorulli , Niklas Bremberg , Joseph Earsom , Franziska Petri and others.
