Navigating the Evolution of Ecogate: Upgrading Your Legacy greenBOX System Ecogate's nearly thirty-year history has seen the evolution of numerous control system generations. While many of these legacy systems remain in active service, there is a demand for technical support and transition paths to our latest, most advanced "Adelie" greenBOX control systems. If you are managing an Ecogate system and wondering about its lifecycle, this guide will help you identify older control units and outline the necessary steps for upgrading to the current generation. Identifying Legacy vs. Current Systems To differentiate between legacy models and the current generation, we employ a specific naming convention. Legacy models use all capital letters (e.g., greenBOX PRO). The new Adelie models use only an initial capital letter (e.g., greenBOX Pro). All control units predating the Adelie family are considered legacy systems, with the exception of the greenBOX 12. The legacy lineup includes: greenBOX (now called greenBOX 8) PLC greenBOX MASTER greenBOX PRO (based on Omron PLC) Windows-based greenBOX MASTER greenBOX NXT Legacy units are no longer supported by Ecogate for service, repair, or software updates because most of their components are end-of-life. While Ecogate no longer offers repair services for these models, we continue to provide technical documentation such as user guides and schematic diagrams. Your Upgrade Path To maintain optimal performance and secure operations, upgrading is highly recommended. The recommended upgrade path depends on your system size. Systems with Fewer Than 12 Gates You should upgrade to the greenBOX 12. The greenBOX 12 is a cost-effective, enduring control unit that is compatible with economical "Standard" gate actuators. In many cases, functional gates and current sensors can often be reused during this upgrade. Systems with More Than 12 Gates Larger setups should upgrade to the Adelie family of greenBOX units. The Adelie generation is an advanced product line featuring the greenBOX Pro, Nxt, Max, and Master units. For later models like the Windows-based greenBOX MASTER and greenBOX NXT, the transition is highly cost-effective, allowing the reuse of VFDs, all gates, sensors, and system wiring. For the oldest systems (such as the greenBOX 8 or PLC greenBOX MASTER), the upgrade generally requires a complete hardware overhaul due to a shift to a daisy-chained Modbus architecture. Users upgrading from the greenBOX 12 to an Adelie unit must replace their Standard gate actuators with Smart actuators to support the new system's daisy-chain wiring. Ready to Modernize? Ecogate offers a loyalty discount for customers transitioning to the new greenBOX 12 or Adelie systems as a token of appreciation for our long-term supporters.
