On the occasion of the opening of the SAF Congress yesterday in Amsterdam, Air France-KLM and numerous partners unveiled the first progress made by their joint working group. Bringing together more than 30 key players from across the value chain, this initiative aims to define common standards to secure and simplify the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Alongside leading partners such as Airbus, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, RSB, World Energy, LLC, Smart Freight Centre, DHL, and Royal Schiphol Group, the group’s work is structured around three priorities: ▶️ Harmonizing the sharing of carbon impact (Scope 3) Developing common rules to better allocate and recognize the carbon impact associated with the use of SAF among the various stakeholders. ▶️ Integrating SAF into international accounting standards Continuing technical discussions with the GHG Protocol to secure official recognition of SAF as a decarbonization tool, as well as of Book & Claim mechanisms. The objective is to ensure that companies’ investments in SAF are fully taken into account in their official emissions reporting. ▶️ Ensuring transaction traceability Assessing the reliability of SAF registries and testing the interoperability of digital platforms in order to ensure reliable, transparent, and tamper-proof tracking of sustainable fuel volumes. The transition of air transport depends on the establishment of robust, harmonized accounting rules shared by all economic stakeholders. This international cooperation illustrates our commitment to building the trust framework essential to accelerating SAF. In addition, Air France-KLM and Airbus have also partnered to reduce the carbon impact of the event.
