Something is happening at the intersection of AI and representation that deserves far more attention than it is currently getting. There is a growing trend of AI-generated influencers deliberately designed to look like Black women. Highly sexualised, exaggerated, and built to drive traffic to explicit content. They are not real people. But the harm they cause is. These avatars are constructed using racialised features, extreme body proportions, and language rooted in stereotypes that have been used to dehumanise Black women for generations. In some cases, real women's content is being taken, altered, and republished under AI identities without their knowledge or consent. Many users encountering this content cannot tell it is not real. This is where the issue goes beyond individual harm into something systemic. AI is not simply replicating people. It is actively reshaping representation. When synthetic images of women, particularly Black women, are manufactured for profit, stripped of identity, and distributed at scale with no accountability and no consent, we have to ask some direct questions. Whose image is being used? Who benefits? And who is protected? Because in these cases, the answer to that last question is not the women being depicted. This is not innovation. It is industrialised objectification operating under the cover of technology. At AIgnite Women, we believe the AI governance conversation has to go further than algorithmic bias and model fairness. It must confront the commodification of identity, the erosion of authentic representation, and the reality that the communities with the least legal protection are consistently bearing the greatest harm. When technology can manufacture people, representation becomes a site of power. And power without accountability causes real damage to real lives.
