AI chatbots are often called tools. That framing is convenient, but it lets a lot of people off the hook. What’s being documented with increasing frequency is this: AI systems are generating violent and degrading imagery of women and girls, often with almost nothing standing in the way. The technology is accessible, low-cost, and fast. You don’t need technical expertise. You just need access. That’s the part worth sitting with. When barriers are that low and accountability is unclear, harm doesn’t just become possible. It becomes predictable. And predictably, it’s women who absorb the consequences. That is not a coincidence. It is a pattern, and patterns don’t change on their own. Gender equality in the AI era cannot mean women simply adapting to systems that were never designed with their safety in mind. It means demanding that safety is built in from the start, that accountability is real, and that the people building these tools answer for what they produce. That is the standard AIgnite Women is pushing for, and it is long overdue.
