1st Year Medicine and Surgery MBBS Student | University of Lancashire | Passionate about research and leadership opportunities

On 17 January 2026, I had the privilege of attending the British International Doctors Association (BIDA) Student Wing National Conference 2026 – “Breaking Barriers: Building Bridges.” Listening to doctors from diverse backgrounds and specialties share their journeys was both inspiring and eye-opening. What stood out most was how different each path looked — some traditional, some unconventional — yet all built on courage, persistence, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones. A recurring message echoed throughout the conference: • Take chances. • Seek experiences beyond the curriculum. • Get involved early. • Don’t wait for permission to grow. As a first-year medical student, this was a powerful reminder that medicine is not just about exams and textbooks. It’s about exposure, initiative, networking, and saying “yes” to opportunities that shape you long before you qualify. Hearing these stories strengthened my motivation to actively build my path rather than passively wait for it to unfold. Grateful to have been part of such a forward-thinking and empowering event. #MedicalStudent #BIDA #BreakingBarriers #FutureDoctor #ProfessionalGrowth
