Innovation in the energy sector just got a little easier with the introduction of fast-tracked sandboxing trial waivers for technical metering proposals. The AER’s Energy Innovation Toolkit allows innovators to test new approaches by granting time-limited waivers from certain rules through regulatory sandboxing. However, we heard from some stakeholders that for smaller, technical trials, the burden of the trial waiver application process could sometimes outweigh the benefits. This new fast-tracked pathway is designed to change that. By streamlining assessment timeframes and in some cases, removing the need for public consultation where impacts are minimal, eligible projects can now move from idea to trial much sooner. This approach is particularly suited to innovators seeking: • minor technical metering changes • technical, small-scale trials that do not impact other market participants • minor waivers from AEMO’s metrology procedures. Importantly, safeguards remain in place. We will continue to assess each application on its merits and consult where needed, ensuring consumers and the market are protected. This is about getting the balance right and reducing unnecessary burden while supporting safe, practical innovation that can benefit energy consumers over time.
