Australia’s electricity system is changing rapidly, driven by new technologies, services and consumer expectations. To help inform discussions about the future of electricity network regulation, we have published an information paper that explores whether the current regulatory framework remains fit for purpose as the electricity system evolves.   The paper looks at the history of network regulation, the regulatory instruments currently available to us, and asks whether what and how we regulate continues to align with why we regulate as the system changes. It also provides observations on how the electricity system and regulatory framework are responding to decentralisation and digitisation, and the changing role of network service providers as they increasingly enable and coordinate new energy services. The paper is intended to support informed engagement with stakeholders and contribute to broader reform initiatives and discussions, including the AEMC’s Electricity Network Regulation Review and related rule change processes.
