Seven years after a simple sign at Wrigley Field led to a kidney donation from a crosstown rival, Chicago Cubs superfan and Advocate Health Care teammate and patient, Bridgett, returned to the ballpark. In 2019, Bridgett attended a Cubs game holding a poster that read, “This Lil’ Cubbie Needs a Kidney.” The photo went viral and eventually reached Chicago White Sox fan Thomas, who was moved to explore becoming a living donor. That connection led to a successful kidney transplant at Advocate Christ Medical Center in July 2020. Bridgett is now a nursing assistant in the Cardiovascular Heart Assessment Recovery and Treatment (H.A.R.T.) Unit at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. She returned to Wrigley Field to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, a full-circle moment for her, surrounded by her family, teammates and her donor, Thomas. Today, Bridgett is thriving: working in healthcare, preparing for nursing school, traveling, hiking and living a life she once wasn’t sure she’d have while on dialysis.
