On this day Eduard Strasburger was born 1 February 1844. Strasburger was Professor of Botany at the University of Bonn. Included in his work he considered the rate of transpiration in trees. He observed the pull of evaporation and the importance of the cohesion of water in tree sap. Thus permitting trees to draw water significantly above capillary action. An interesting observation of his work is that Carpinus starts to bleed (guttation) during the night and ceases before noon. Carpinus betula - hornbeam. kar-PINE-us; ancient L. name for Hornbeam. Deciduous trees.
