Calopogon tuberosus Grass pink orchid. kal-o-PO-gon; from Gr. kalos, beautiful; pogon, a beard, referring to the fringed floral lip. Terrestrial Orchid. Margery Carlson, born on this day 21 November 1892, American botanist and first female professor at Northwestern University. Carlson researched novel ways to propagate orchids. She was able to rapidly cultivate the grass pink orchid reducing the growth to maturity from seven to three years.
