Taking silks Garrya elliptica - silk-tassel bush. GAR-re-a; named by Douglas in honour of Mr Garry, of the Hudson Bay Company who gave the former much assistance in his plant-collecting expeditions (1820-1890) in the Pacific North West. Shrubs. Native to California it can be grown against a south or west facing wall. It is ideal for architectural interest and can be grown in a sheltered shrubbery. Minimal pruning required though it can be shaped in spring after flowering. A dioecious plant (male and female flowers on separate plants) the male plant is only cultivated. It has small flowers enclosed in silvery grey cup-shaped bracts on long drooping catkins. These silk-tassels hang on the plant through winter. #plantnamessimplified #plantsofinstagram #plantoftheday #plantidentification #plantsrock #cornaceae #garrys #elliptica #architectural #silktasselbush #california #horticulture #horticulturetherapy #horticulturist #horticulturestudents #rhs #rhsstudent #flowers #flowersofgram #floristry #floristrystudent #gardening #arboriculture #landscape #botanicallatin #scientificnames #taxonomy #5mpublishing #5m #landscapearchitecture
