Theodore Payne Rosa californica - California rose, kal-if-OR-nik-a, of California. Payne was born on this day 1872 in Church Brampton, Northampton. He emigrated to California in 1893 and initially worked for the Modjeska Ranch. It was here that he discovered his passion for Californian native plants whilst taking walks in the countryside. He was dismayed with having to cultivate European plants unsuitable for the climate, such as roses. The Californian rose is a drought tolerant thicket forming shrub. One of around 400 Californian native species which Payne is recognised as bringing into cultivation. #plantnamessimplified #plantoftheday #plantsofinstagram #plantidentification #native #rosaceae #rosa #californica #californianrose #california #sustainablegardening #droughttolerant #horticulture #horticulturetherapy #horticulturist #horticulturestudents #rhs #rhsstudent #arboriculture #arboriculturestudent #staysafe #botanicallatin #latinnames #scientificnames #taxonomy #5mpublishing #5m #onthisday #theodorepayne
