The Atomium in Brussels, designed by André and Jean Polak for the 1958 World's Fair, is a steel structure representing a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times its actual dimensions. It was built as a temporary installation. It was never demolished. It is now one of the most recognisable architectural icons in Europe and, arguably, one of the most successful accidental monuments in the history of built form. Belgium's architectural culture has consistently produced work of this character — Victor Horta's Art Nouveau houses (UNESCO World Heritage), the Grand Place (Victor Hugo's "finest town square in Europe") technical precision combined with a willingness to make statements that appear surreal until they become canonical. Belgian football mirrors this instinct: a golden generation of technically exceptional players capable of producing results that confound conventional expectation. The Monument de la Renaissance Africaine, commissioned by President Abdoulaye Wade and completed in 2010 on a hilltop above Dakar overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, is a 49-metre bronze statue visible approximately 100 kilometres at sea. It was controversial at commissioning debates about its cost relative to Senegal's development priorities, questions about the authorship and the symbolic choices in its design. Lagos is the largest city in Africa, the most economically significant city in sub-Saharan Africa, and by most cultural production metrics, the continent's most generative creative capital. We have not built the monument that makes those facts visible from 100 kilometres. Not because the resources are absent. Not because the architectural talent is unavailable. Because we have not yet made the decision to commission it. That decision — to build the monument that says, explicitly and visibly: Lagos is rising, and this is what that looks like is available.
