All followers : Hannah Yeoh , as the Malaysian Federal Territories Minister, has demonstrated in just 100 days what many felt her predecessor failed to deliver over a much longer period. Credit must be given for her swift interventions and responsiveness to longstanding issues affecting Kuala Lumpur. What is equally striking is her candid reminder that such #reforms may be abruptly halted should a general election be called anytime soon. That uncertainty itself reflects the fragility of long-term #urbangovernance in Malaysia. But Kuala Lumpur’s challenges are far deeper than #cosmetic fixes. It needs #architectural and #urbandesign solutions The city has become increasingly unaffordable for ordinary Malaysians. Land and housing prices in the #city #centre have escalated beyond the reach of the masses. Today, only a privileged few — expatriates, investors, and the wealthy — can realistically afford to live within the urban core. The working population, whom the city critically depends on as its labour force, are pushed further and further outward. This has created massive #urbansprawl, long #commuting hours, #unsustainable dependence on private vehicles, and the daily nightmare of traffic congestion. Ironically, by the end of business hours, large parts of the city centre become almost ghost towns — except for pockets occupied by foreign workers, tourists, and international nomads. A city cannot thrive if the very people who sustain its economy cannot afford to live in it. The question is no longer whether Kuala Lumpur can continue to grow. The real question is: can it remain liveable, inclusive, and sustainable for ordinary Malaysians? Can we solve this? Perhaps Nga Kor Ming has an answer?
