š¶ What Really Happens When Your Phone Connects to 5G? Most people see a signal bar appear and move on. We see a 500ms symphony of radio procedures running flawlessly in the background. Here's what's actually happening under the hood: š Step 1: Cell Search & System Acquisition The UE wakes up and starts scanning. ā PSS/SSS detection for frequency and time synchronization ā PBCH decodes the MIB ā cell identity, SFN, bandwidth part config ā SIB1 and subsequent SIBs deliver RACH config, PLMN info, and access barring rules No valid SIB decode = no access attempt. The UE doesn't guess ā it reads the rules first. š¤ Step 2: RACH ā Four Messages, Zero Margin for Error ā”ļø Msg1: Preamble transmitted on PRACH ā selected randomly or assigned (CFRA) ā¬ ļø Msg2: RAR carries Timing Advance, Temporary C-RNTI, and UL grant ā”ļø Msg3: RRC Setup Request + UE identity over PUSCH ā¬ ļø Msg4: Contention Resolution ā gNB confirms the right UE won Timing Advance here is critical. Without it, uplink slots collide and the procedure fails. Every microsecond matters. š Step 3: RRC Setup & NAS Registration Radio link is up. Now the core gets involved. ā RRC Setup Complete carries the NAS Registration Request to the AMF ā AMF triggers Authentication & Key Agreement (AKA) ā SUCI is used to protect the SUPI over the air ā NAS Security Mode Command activates ciphering and integrity protection ā RRC Reconfiguration completes the AS security activation The UE doesn't touch user data until both NAS and AS security are fully armed. š Step 4: PDU Session Establishment ā The Last Mile Registration is done. But you're still not online. āļø UE sends a PDU Session Establishment Request to the SMF via AMF āļø SMF selects UPF, allocates IP, and programs the N4 session rules āļø N3 GTP-U tunnel is established between UPF and gNB āļø RRC Reconfiguration pushes the DRB config to the UE āļø First data packet flows That's the moment the bar goes full and the app loads.
