I recently had the incredible opportunity to complete a Neurology Elective at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, and I can confidently say it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my medical training. I still can’t quite believe I can say that I’ve worked in New York! During my elective, I was based at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, part of the NewYork-Presbyterian system—one of the largest healthcare systems in the USA! Throughout my time in both the stroke unit and general neurology teams, I was exposed to a wide range of complex and fascinating cases—from acute stroke codes to diverse neurological presentations including movement disorders, autoimmune, and neuropsychiatric conditions. This experience significantly strengthened my clinical reasoning, neurological examination skills, and confidence in patient assessment and management. Beyond the hospital, experiencing New York itself was truly amazing. The energy, diversity, and pace of the city made this elective even more special, and it was inspiring to be learning medicine in such a vibrant and dynamic environment. I’ve also added a few photos of NYC to share just how incredible the experience was! What truly made this experience special was the people. The doctors at Cornell were incredibly kind, supportive, and dedicated to teaching. Their patience, compassion, and commitment to patient-centred care left a lasting impression on me. I felt genuinely welcomed into the team and thoroughly enjoyed the work environment, which was both challenging and inspiring. I have grown so much both professionally and personally during this elective. From improving my note-taking and clinical approach to learning the importance of communication and empathy in patient care, this experience has shaped the way I view my future career in medicine. I am extremely grateful to The University of Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Medical School for providing me with this amazing opportunity through their partnership elective programme, and to Cornell for hosting me and creating such a supportive and enriching learning environment. A truly unforgettable experience !
