I am pleased to share that our latest research paper, "A Critical Analysis of Protection and Indemnity Insurance in Shipwreck and Derelict Removal," has just been published in the Bowen Law Journal (Volume 2, Issue 2, 2025). In this article, co-authored with Dr. Kamalu Felix Chikwado PH.D, we examine the persistent challenge of shipwrecks and derelict vessels in Nigerian waters. While this issue is often attributed solely to high removal costs, our research reveals a more fundamental, structural problem: a misalignment between legal responsibility and the necessary financial architecture to enforce it. Our findings suggest that the lack of a robust, domestic Protection and Indemnity (P&I) framework is a key factor hindering effective maritime governance in Nigeria. To address this, we advocate for the establishment of a Nigerian P&I Club—structured as a company limited by guarantee—to provide the mutual insurance and indemnity services required to align legal obligations with practical enforcement. I invite you to read the full analysis to understand our proposed pathway toward strengthening maritime safety and environmental protection in our waters. You can access the full paper via the link in the comments below! 👇 #MaritimeLaw #Nigeria #LegalResearch #ShipwreckRemoval #P&IInsurance #MarineEnvironment #AcademicPublishing
