When I'm hiring, I'm not focusing on the big logos. I'm focusing on where and who they come from – their leaders. Most people skip this. They see a great company on a résumé and stop there, I don’t blame them. But the real question is who did they actually work for? What kind of operator was that person? How did they run the business, drive pipeline, coach their team? Great leaders produce great protégés. So I'm always asking – who are the second and third in commands of the people I most respect? That's where a lot of the best talent is quietly sitting. The mistake I've made is getting sold by the brand without digging into the operator behind it. Someone can come from a great company, tell you everything you want to hear, and six months in you realize… the company did the work, not them. The logo tells you where they've been but the leader tells you who they'll become.
