As Asia accelerates its energy transition, one question is becoming increasingly important: can the region build the transmission infrastructure required to unlock a truly interconnected power system? During the Financial Times discussion held alongside the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Annual Meeting in Samarkand, industry and government leaders explored the opportunities and challenges of creating a Pan-Asian super grid — a vision that could transform regional energy security, resilience and sustainability. Representing Acwa, Abid Malik, President for Acwa Central Asia, highlighted a fundamental principle behind the success of large-scale infrastructure development: "To build transmission infrastructure at scale, you need to come into a country and partner with the government." The conversation brought together distinguished speakers from across the region, including Ekaterine Guntsadze, Deputy Minister of Finance of Georgia; Khulan Bat-Erdene, Deputy Minister of Finance of Mongolia; Priyantha Wijayatunga, Senior Director, Energy Sector Group at the Asian Development Bank; and was moderated by Raphael Minder, Central Europe Correspondent at the Financial Times.
