The future of Central Asia’s energy sector was at the center of the panel session “Energy Transition: Renewables, Nuclear and Hydrogen in Central Asia” during TIIF 2026, bringing together government representatives, development partners, and industry leaders. Representing Acwa, Abid Malik, President Acwa Central Asia, highlighted the company’s global portfolio of over 100 projects across 15 countries and nearly 100 GW of capacity. He also emphasized Acwa’s leadership in green hydrogen, including Uzbekistan’s first green hydrogen facility and efforts supporting industrial decarbonization. Reflecting on Uzbekistan’s energy transformation, Abid Malik noted that Acwa’s journey began with the 1.5 GW Sirdarya CCGT project in 2020 and has grown into a portfolio exceeding 12 GW and approximately USD 15 billion in investments. He stressed that transmission infrastructure and energy storage are essential to support renewable energy growth, highlighting that Acwa has already developed around 500 km of transmission infrastructure in Uzbekistan. The government perspective was presented by Umid Mamadaminov, Deputy Minister of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, who outlined the country’s ongoing reforms and long-term energy priorities. The discussion also brought together leading international organizations and private sector representatives, including Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of the World Nuclear Association; Sule Kilic, Director and Head of Energy Eurasia at EBRD; Maryam Almazrouie Rashed, Head of Business Development CIS at Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company); and Takefumi Nishikawa, Executive Officer and COO of the Energy Solutions & Public Infrastructure Division at Sojitz Corporation.
