How did a physicist who admitted he didn't like quantum mechanics end up writing the equation that defines it, and why did he turn to Vedanta to make peace with what he had found? Erwin Schrödinger was born on 12 August 1887 in Vienna and died there on 4 January 1961. Trained under Boltzmann's intellectual legacy at the University of Vienna, he moved through statistical mechanics, wartime service in meteorology and optics, and academic posts in Stuttgart, Breslau, and Zurich before 1926. That year he published the equation bearing his name, describing how a quantum system's wave function evolves in time. It became, alongside Heisenberg's matrix mechanics, one of the two founding formulations of quantum theory, and earned him the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with Paul Dirac. Schrödinger was never fully comfortable with the implications of his own formalism. He introduced his famous cat in 1935 not to celebrate quantum weirdness but to expose what he saw as its absurdity when extended from atoms to everyday objects. The thought experiment has since become the standard shorthand for superposition itself. His philosophical commitments ran deeper than physics. In letters and essays, including correspondence with Einstein, Schrödinger described multiplicity as apparent rather than fundamental, language he traced explicitly to the Upanishads. This is documented in Walter Moore's biography, Schrödinger: Life and Thought (1989), and in his own writings collected in My View of the World. He left Nazi era Europe in 1933 for Oxford, later returning to Vienna, where he continued writing until his death. His influence extends past physics into biology, through What Is Life?, and into the technology underlying semiconductors, laser optics, and quantum computing. His most frequently cited remark on discovery reads, in essence, that the task of science is not merely to see what has not yet been seen but to think what has not yet been thought about what everyone already sees.
