A mishap with my ticket on a train journey home after a loooong day, led to a chance meeting with the parents of Joe Dix, who kindly shared their story with me. Joe was tragically murdered in Norwich in 2022 only 18 years old after years of being groomed within "County Lines" operations. Joe's parents shared their insights, heartache and experiences of desperately trying to safeguard Joe in the years leading up to his death. However what stood out most to me is their continued hope, determination and trust that lives can change, and young people can be supported to live a life free from exploitation and violence through education, awareness and openness to challenging perceptions. Exploitation does not discriminate against colour, background, religion or social class. Sadly the systems designed to safeguard and support, are not always as responsive to families not displaying outward vulnerabilities or seeming to "have it together". You guys are honestly inspirational, I am so grateful to have met you and heard your story first hand. Joe was a very lucky boy, to have such loving, devoted parents that are now turning their pain into passion to help save other lives, in his honour. ❤️ On a personal note, meeting you has made me challenge some of my own assumptions and thinking around how professionals work with families involved with risks outside the home and what can be done to reduce stigma and parent blaming, and increase cooperation and partnership. As a parent, i cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like to be facing these frightening and complex issues with one of my children.
