As a board member deeply committed to building strong workforce solutions, I am incredibly concerned about the immediate threat to New York's healthcare sector. This recent piece by Documented highlights a terrifying reality: the dismantling of Haitian TPS will actively dismantle our care infrastructure. For years, we’ve talked about the "nursing shortage" and the "care gap." Yet, instead of building pathways to support and retain the dedicated professionals we already have, we are stripping away their right to work. Immigrant healthcare workers showed up for New York during the darkest days of COVID-19. Repaying them by cutting off their work authorizations is both a humanitarian failure and an economic self-injury. In workforce development, we look at sustainability. There is nothing sustainable about a policy that forces experienced caregivers like Fred (profiled in the article) to sit at home while his elderly patients call him, asking when he can return.
