Proud to share our new ๐‘ต๐’‚๐’•๐’–๐’“๐’† ๐‘ด๐’†๐’•๐’‰๐’๐’…๐’” paper introducing ๐‚๐ฅ๐จ๐ฎ๐๐’๐œ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž, a cloud connected, multicontrast miniscope designed for ๐ง๐ž๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž in freely behaving animals. What if the brain could be studied not in short experimental snapshots, but continuously, as behavior naturally unfolds? That is the vision behind CloudScope. In this work, we designed and developed CloudScope to move beyond brief observation windows and open a new view into some of neuroscienceโ€™s most complex questions: how neural, vascular, and cellular processes interact across natural behavior, seizure related neurovascular disruption, and brain tumor evolution. A key advance was applying deep learning to a type of dataset rarely explored with AI: ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ฎ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ, ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ž๐ช๐ฎ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ฒ, ๐ฐ๐ข๐๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ž๐ฅ๐ ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐œ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ข๐ง๐  acquired across an entire day. Using established computer vision models, we decoded natural behavior from neurosurveillance data, while sanity checks confirmed that the model learned ๐ฆ๐ž๐š๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐ง๐ž๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐›๐ž๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ rather than simply memorizing the data. Beyond behavior prediction, CloudScope enabled mapping of neurovascular changes during natural behavior, characterization of seizure related disruption and recovery, and longitudinal tracking of cellular and microvascular changes during brain tumor evolution. We believe CloudScope and neurosurveillance represent an important step toward understanding how brain function changes across natural behavior, disease progression, and therapeutic response, helping us address some of neuroscienceโ€™s most complex questions in ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐ž.
