Today marks a milestone for #Morocco, for #Africa, and for the clean energy transition. The World Bank Group Board approved $265 million to support the Ifahsa Pumped Hydropower Storage Project — one of the most significant clean energy infrastructure investments on the African continent. Located near Chefchaouen, this 300-megawatt facility will act as a giant rechargeable battery for Morocco's national grid. When the sun shines and the wind blows, water is pumped to an upper reservoir. When electricity is needed most, that water flows back through turbines to generate clean, reliable power — on demand. The numbers speak for themselves: 1 GW of additional solar and wind energy integrated into the grid ~$1 billion in private investment unlocked 1.7 million tons of CO₂ emissions avoided annually 820 direct jobs created each year during construction But beyond the figures, this project is about something larger: proving that transformative partnerships work. The World Bank Group, African Development Bank Group, the Clean Technology Fund, the Livable Planet Fund, come together to show how multilateral collaboration can mobilize capital and accelerate the transition to a resilient, low-carbon future. Morocco has long been a regional leader in renewable energy ambition. Ifahsa contributes to turning that ambition into reality — giving households, businesses, and communities access to cleaner, more reliable electricity, and strengthening Morocco's position in a world that increasingly demands low-carbon supply chains. I am deeply honored to stand alongside our partners ONEE and the African Development Bank Group in supporting what is, to date, one of Morocco's most ambitious clean energy endeavors.
