AI helped researchers virtually unwrap and read a scroll from Herculaneum, carbonised by Vesuvius in AD79, revealing 20 columns of previously hidden text spanning over a metre of charred papyrus. The content appears to be a stoic treatise, possibly by the philosopher Chrysippus, covering ethics, impulse, and practical wisdom. The work was led by Dr Federica Nicolardi of the University of Naples Federico II, building on machine-learning techniques developed by Prof Brent Seales of the University of Kentucky, as part of the Vesuvius Challenge.
