Spatial Computing in Neurosurgery – from Education to Patient Care With support from the European Union and the Free State of Saxony (funding of approximately €1.4 million), the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Leipzig has developed an innovative Spatial Computing platform. Its initial application focuses on medical education, training, and professional development, providing a more immersive and intuitive way to teach neurosurgical procedures. At the same time, the platform serves as a foundation for future clinical applications. One example is the placement of an External Ventricular Drain (EVD). Using a head-mounted display, the planned catheter trajectory is projected directly into the surgeon’s field of view and accurately aligned with the patient's anatomy. The aim is to improve placement accuracy, increase first-pass success rates, and ultimately enhance patient safety. This project highlights how Spatial Computing, clinical expertise, and interdisciplinary collaboration can help shape the future of neurosurgery—from education and training to clinical care.
