A masterclass in military precision, or a glaring political double standard? This week, the world watched as Royal Marine Commandos fast-roped from helicopters in a high-stakes, midnight raid to seize the Smyrtos—a massive Russian "shadow fleet" oil tanker moving through the English Channel. It was a flawless execution of state capability, acting under direct government orders to choke off foreign funds. But it leaves everyday observers asking a deeply uncomfortable question: If the British military possesses the elite hardware, tracking technology, and tactical resolve to board and halt a massive commercial vessel, why does it remain completely powerless against a fleet of rubber dinghies crossing the exact same strip of water? The reality comes down to a choice of frameworks—moving with absolute aggression on international sanctions, while hiding behind a web of legal loopholes and search-and-rescue mandates when defending domestic coastlines. Are we prioritising global optics over domestic border security? Is it a question of military capability, or simply a lack of political spine? I break down the maritime paradox, the legal double standards, and what this tells us about the state’s current priorities in my latest blog post. 👇 Read the full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/effkeiFX #NationalSecurity #ShadowFleet #MaritimeLaw #BorderControl #PublicPolicy
