Corporate Recoveries & Restructuring | Santander Risk & Compliance Graduate | University College London

⭐ As I come to the end of my first rotation on Santander UK's Risk & Compliance Graduate Programme, I feel it's an opportune time to reflect on what has been a rewarding last 9 months. 💼 In my role within the Data Protection Advisory team, I have had the opportunity to play a key role in Santander UK's implementation of the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. While my initial focus was on understanding the legislation and its implications, my responsibilities evolved into supporting the wider delivery and oversight of the project across the bank. This involved working closely with stakeholders across multiple business areas to identify regulatory gaps, monitor remediation activity, track progress against key milestones, and ensure that implementation remained on schedule. A significant part of the role involved challenging and supporting stakeholders to evidence that actions had been completed appropriately, escalating risks where delivery deadlines were at risk, and helping to maintain momentum across a complex programme of work. ♨️ One of the most valuable aspects of the rotation has been the opportunity to present updates to senior management, providing visibility of progress, highlighting emerging risks and supporting informed decision-making. Being trusted with this level of responsibility has been both challenging and rewarding. 💪🏽 Looking back, the experience has strengthened a broad range of skills especially in project management, stakeholder management and managing competing priorities. Perhaps most importantly, it has provided me with first-hand experience of how large-scale regulatory change is implemented across a major financial institution and the importance of effective collaboration in achieving successful outcomes. 📚 Alongside the rotation, I have also begun my professional studies through the Chartered Banker Institute, which I am excited to continue as I progress through the programme. 🙏🏽 A special thank you to the Data Protection Officer Miriam Hall, my rotation manager, Maxine Watts and the wider Data Protection team for their support, guidance throughout the rotation. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I have been given and for everything I have learned along the way. 🎉 I am now looking forward to beginning my next rotation in Corporate Recoveries under Paul Heaney. This presents an exciting opportunity to gain exposure to a completely different side of risk and the bank. This rotation is a great chance for me to develop a deeper understanding of the full credit lifecycle, from lending decisions through to recovery strategies when businesses encounter financial difficulty. I am particularly excited to build my financial analysis skills, gain an understanding of how credit is managed when circumstances change, and develop a greater understanding of how businesses succeed, struggle, and ultimately navigate challenging circumstances. Excited for the next chapter and the opportunities ahead!
