Knowledge, Competencies and Careers

This historic photograph depicts Georges Nagelmackers (1845–1905), the prominent Belgian civil engineer, industrialist, and travel entrepreneur. Founder of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL), the legendary enterprise responsible for creating and operating the Orient Express luxury train service.  Born into a family of wealthy bankers, Nagelmackers traveled to the United States in the late 1860s where he observed George Pullman's sleeper carriages. Inspired by this concept, he returned to Europe and refined the idea to build an interconnected network of opulent continental sleeper trains. This culminated in the grand launch of the inaugural Orient Express journey from Paris to Constantinople (Istanbul) on October 4, 1883. #tiesinstitute #orientexpress #luxurytrains #traveltourism #career *"All rights belong to the respective owners.
