I’m deeply saddened by the news of the tragic death of MOBOs founder, Kanya King CBE. I’ve known Kanya for over 40 years from back in northwest /west London, and it’s been inspirational to see all that she achieved. For most of that time we trod different paths, but would always say hello and exchange pleasantries when we saw each other, be it in the streets of Harlesden back in the day or some prestigious event in latter years. In the last 3 years though, it’s been an honour and privilege to sit alongside her as a member of Sky’s Diversity Advisory Council. Having an insight into how she battled that terrible disease over the last year or so, has been awe-inspiring – her bravery, her dignity, her enthusiasm was such that were it not for the physical changes, one could almost forget what she was going through. Her contribution to music and more in this country, has been enormous and will be long lasting, she really has left a legacy. And something that I shared with her directly, and have happily told others when it’s come up, is that it was the knowledge of MOBO Awards, the MOBOs, that inspired me to use the SOMOs as the name for the UK Social Mobility Awards gala, and bring the term SOMO to the social mobility landscape. I was more than happy to give her deserved flowers when she was alive. RIP Kanya, my heart goes out to your family and loved ones, you achieved greatness and you will never be forgotten. Peace and love. 🙏🏿 💔
