Today, I watched a fascinating interview by Taiwanese Business Weekly featuring Laura Ho, former Senior VP of TSMC: "Laura Ho’s First Day of Retirement." The insights shared were profound. Having spent 27 years at TSMC, she witnessed the company’s ascent to global dominance. I’ve summarized three key takeaways that resonated with me most. (Flowing with the Tide: Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone) We often think of careers as straight lines, but Laura demonstrates the power of being cross-disciplinary. After 16 years as CFO, she stepped into a Sales & Business role when the company needed her. 2. (From Control to Influence: Authority is Obsolete) 她提到職場世代的演變:從 Survive (求生存)到 Live (過生活),再到現在年輕人追求的 Life (生命的意義)。 She highlights the evolution of the workforce: from "Surviving" to "Living", and now to the younger generation’s pursuit of "Life" (meaning and purpose). The old "command and control" style is losing its grip. In an era where people seek purpose, leaders must pivot from "Control" to "Influence", fostering an environment of psychological safety. 3. (Values as a Compass Amidst Uncertainty) When facing complex decisions or geopolitical challenges, data might not be enough. That’s when "values" become the ultimate guide. She shared a story where Founder Morris Chang discovered TSMC had over 2,000 dispatch workers. Believing this violated his principle of treating all staff equally, he ordered them all to be converted to permanent employees within months, regardless of cost. This video made me rethink: In the age of AI, what values are irreplaceable? I believe it’s empathy for people and the unwavering commitment to core values. The video link is in the comments. Highly recommended.
