Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet one‑on‑one with Scott Vedder, and it was exactly the guidance I needed at this stage of my transition. After hearing the same advice from many trusted friends and mentors, I finally applied to The COMMIT Foundation. During my initial call, I admitted something I know many transitioning service members feel but rarely say out loud: I was stuck writing an impactful résumé. It felt like I had plenty of “flowy words,” but nothing with real substance. My counselor didn’t hesitate—“We’re signing you up to meet with Scott Vedder.” I’m so glad they did. From the start, Scott created a space where I felt understood. He reassured me that my concerns are common, and that the goal isn’t to “crack the code” of an ATS system—it’s to build a résumé that is authentically you and clearly communicates how you can help an organization succeed. One message that truly resonated: Use your skills to pay your bills. Use your passion to feel fulfilled. Scott reminded me that networking is essential—not just to get your résumé seen, but to ensure it lands with an actual person who can appreciate your “greatest hits.” This conversation was exactly what I needed as I continue shaping my next chapter. Thank you, Scott, for your insight, encouragement, and expertise. If you haven’t read his work, I highly recommend checking out his article. It’s well worth the time.
