🚨 Excited to share our latest publication in Allergy by Shahriyar Shahbazi Khamas, which I had the honor to lead with Anke-Hilse Maitland-van der Zee! Our study, “Complementary Predictors for Asthma Attack Prediction in Children: Salivary Microbiome, Serum Inflammatory Mediators, and Past Attack History”, investigated how we can better predict future asthma attacks in children. 🔹 The child’s history of past asthma attacks remains the most reliable predictor of future attacks, to date. 🔹 However, relying solely on past events is not enough — it fails to capture underlying biological background and its accuracy is rather limited. 🔹 That is why we searched for better predictors. By integrating the oral bacteriome and systemic inflammatory mediators with clinical history (past attacks), we developed a combined predictive model that significantly improved accuracy (AUROCC up to 0.84). This multi-dimensional approach shows the promise of non-invasive biomarkers such as the bacteriome in improving pediatric asthma risk stratification and moving towards precision medicine. While encouraging, we still have some steps to take before reaching a clinically applicable solution.
