MARCH (Also my birthday month!) is Women's History Month! 😄🙌🏼 👩🏿👩🏽👩🏻👩🏼👵🏻👵🏼👵🏽👵🏾👵🏿 💪🏼💖 I'd like to highlight some cool Denver women that have made invaluable contributions and positive impacts in Denver, Colorado, America, and the world! Content courtesy of the City of Denver employee marketing and communications team: " Women played a vital role in making Denver the city we all know and love today: Ellis Meredith was considered the "Susan B. Anthony of the West" for her work in the women's suffrage movement which ultimately led to Colorado becoming the second state in the Union to grant women the right to vote - and the first state to grant this right by popular vote. The following year, Denverites Clara Cressingham and Francis Klock became the first women to serve in a state legislature when they were elected into the Colorado House of Representatives. Sarah Breedlove - Better known as Madam CJ Walker - began building her fortune in Denver before becoming the first self-made millionaire in the U.S. Ramona Martinez was the first Latina elected as Denver City Council President and held the position for three consecutive terms. In that time she fought for helped cultivate better opportunities for women and minorities. Ding-Wen Hsu is the founder of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, the largest AAPI festival in the Rocky Mountain region. The creation of the festival and her work with Asian American students aims to help preserve Asian cultures and elevate awareness of the so-called "invisible community." Doctor Justina Ford built her legacy as "The Baby Doctor" from her Five Points home after she was not permitted to work in Colorado Hospitals because of the color of her skin. She delivered more than 7,000 babies into the world, serving Denver families of all socioeconomic backgrounds. Her home is now preserved as the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center. ​​​​ These are just a handful of examples of the trail blazed by these Denver women.
