🚰 Designing better water through smarter engineering! ACCIONA, as Lead Constructor, is working with Water Corporation and Jacobs to integrate a groundwater treatment plant into the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant in Perth to improve drinking water quality and reduce long-term chemical use. This approach blends treated groundwater with desalinated water to achieve balanced, stable drinking water. It means quality is optimised through engineering decisions that benefit households across Perth’s northern growth corridors. Up to 50% fewer chemicals are expected to be required to achieve potable water compared with traditional desalination post-treatment methods. This reduction matters - because it improves operational efficiency while lowering handling requirements and long-term environmental impact. Desalinated water is extremely pure but needs minerals reintroduced to be suitable for consumption. At Alkimos, filtered groundwater with natural hardness provides calcium and magnesium that help stabilise pH, alkalinity and hardness. The integrated design allows post-treatment chemicals to be applied only when required to meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. This creates more consistent outcomes and reduces reliance on corrective processes. Early inclusion of the groundwater treatment plant has simplified operations as production scales up. It also strengthens safety and performance across the full life of this critical infrastructure. This is the first desalination plant of this scale in Western Australia to use groundwater blending as the primary method for final water quality. The result is a more climate-resilient, reliable drinking water supply built to meet growing demand. We are proud to see how thoughtful engineering choices can deliver sustainable outcomes for communities, today and into the future. #ACCIONAteam #BusinessAsUnusual #SustainableInfrastructure #WaterInfrastructure #Desalination #ClimateResilience
