How do you train doctors when the internet barely works? Not a hypothetical. Not a design thinking exercise. This is the daily reality for Medici con l'Africa Cuamm/ Doctors with Africa CUAMM, the oldest Italian healthcare NGO, operating across eight countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their flagship "Just in Time" disaster medicine course has trained over 2,500 frontline doctors, nurses, and midwives since 2023. People who save lives for a living. But their previous Moodle platform couldn't keep up. Pages wouldn't load. Courses crashed on the Android smartphones that field workers actually use. In settings where connectivity is scarce and training windows are short, every failed login is a missed opportunity to prepare someone for a medical emergency. That's where we came in. Abstract-Technology GmbH migrated, rebuilt, and now manages their entire learning ecosystem on a new Open edX® platform, engineered from the ground up for the conditions their learners actually face. What that looks like in practice: 🔸 2,500+ healthcare professionals trained across 8 African countries 🔸 4 languages fully localized — English, French, Portuguese, Italian 🔸 100% mobile-first architecture with micro-learning modules optimized for low-bandwidth environments 🔸 Complete Moodle-to-Open edX migration, custom branding, multilingual certification workflows, and integrated analytics See the platform live: https://lnkd.in/dGM_AFcx Here is what the Team at CUAMM is saying: "Our initial attempts were hindered by a platform that was slow, difficult to manage, and required high-speed internet - a luxury in many of the contexts where we operate. Abstract Technology completely transformed this experience. The new platform is intuitive, supports three languages, and is optimized for smartphone use."  - Valentina Isidoris, Project Manager, Doctors with Africa CUAMM We've spent over a decade building learning platforms for universities, corporates, enterprises, governments and international organizations across Europe and Globe. But projects like this remind us why this work matters. Whether the learner is sitting in a lecture hall in Berlin or a rural clinic in Mozambique, the infrastructure behind their education should never be the thing that fails them.
